What are the four main categories of construction projects?

Sep 10,2025

  Industrial and Civil Engineering Construction

Refers to construction projects involved in material production and those directly serving material production activities. Typically includes: production (processing, storage, and transportation) workshops, laboratory facilities, warehouses, civil boiler rooms, and other buildings used for industrial purposes.

  Civil Engineering Construction

Refers to non-productive buildings directly used to meet people's material and cultural needs. These typically include residential buildings and various types of public utility projects.

Independent laboratories and testing facilities within research institutions are classified according to the engineering category of civil construction projects.

  Structural Engineering

Refers to projects that are either integrated with industrial or civil construction, or stand independently as part of such projects. Typically includes structures such as chimneys, water towers, warehouses, and various types of reservoirs or pools.

  Separate Earthwork and Excavation Project

Earthwork projects that go beyond the basic excavation and filling required for buildings, structures, municipal facilities, and are separately estimated in cost projections. These projects include activities such as earthmoving, excavation, filling, and transportation.

  Pile Foundation Engineering

A deep foundation is used when shallow foundations on natural ground cannot meet the stability requirements of buildings and structures. It primarily includes various cast-in-place and precast concrete piles, as well as other types of pile foundations.

  Decorative Engineering

The decorative finishing work carried out after the main structural framework of a building is completed, involving plastering, tiling, and laying surface layers on the main structure and related areas to achieve the desired architectural design aesthetic.
